Orthokeratology slows myopic progression in young patients

Findings from the latest Ophthalmic Technology Assessment support the use of orthokeratology for curbing pediatric myopic progression.

Thirteen studies—including 11 with level II evidence—showed that the treatment reduces axial elongation by approximately 50% over a 2-year period and is especially effective in patients aged 6 to 8 years. None of the studies, however, reported safety as a primary outcome.

Although orthokeratology effectively slows myopic progression, microbial keratitis from contact lens wear remains a concern.
